Tales of Arise

Developer | Bandai Namco Studios |
---|---|
Publisher | Bandai Namco Entertainment |
Release Date | September 10, 2021 |
Metacritic Rating | 87 |
The Tales series by Bandai Namco has been around since the mid-1990s. Along with games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, it was one of the most famous and productive JRPG series in the early 2000s. After a break of five years, the series came back in 2021 with Tales of Arise, which many people think is one of the best Tales games ever made.
The player controls Alphen, a strange man in a mask who doesn’t remember anything about his past. With the help of a ragtag group of outcasts he meets on his journey, the main character with the ashy hair must defeat a number of powerful foes in order to free the people of Dahna from their Renan masters. The story can be a little strange at times, but the gameplay is always a lot of fun.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition

Developer | Bethesda Game Studios |
---|---|
Publisher | Bethesda Softworks |
Release Date | November 11, 2021 |
Metacritic Rating | 73 |
When Skyrim was ported to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles in late 2021, it became one of only a few games to be released on three different generations of platforms. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t perfect when it came out. Bugs and a general lack of polish led both players and reviewers to give it bad reviews.
Even though more could have been done to make The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition feel like a real next-gen game, there is still a lot to like about this timeless classic. It’s one of the best role-playing games ever made, and while the PC version is definitely the best way to play it, the PS5 version is still pretty good.
Hogwarts Legacy

Developer | Avalanche Software |
---|---|
Publisher | Warner Bros. Games |
Release Date | February 7, 2023 |
Metacritic Rating | 84 |
Before Hogwarts Legacy came out, Harry Potter fans had been yelling for years for a real role-playing game set in the wizarding world. Even though the game takes place about a hundred years before the books and movies, most people will probably agree that Hogwarts Legacy more than delivers.
Spell-based fighting works surprisingly well, and the extra lore added to the game’s story does a great job of giving the wizarding world a new lease on life. Even so, the fact that there isn’t a Quidditch minigame is a little depressing, and the story does start to lose steam as it goes on. Even so, it’s still a great game that you should check out.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Developer | Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio |
---|---|
Publisher | Sega |
Release Date | March 2, 2021 |
Metacritic Rating | 86 |
The choice to switch Yakuza’s fights to a turn-based system: Some Yakuza fans were skeptical when they heard about Like a Dragon. But most people ended up liking the change a lot, and the new method helped give the long-running Japanese franchise a new lease on life.
Like a Dragon also has a new main character, Ichiban Kasuga, who takes the place of Kazuma Kiryu as the major character of the series. The latter is joined by a group of fun characters, each of whom adds to the great story of the game. It’s still as crazy as ever, though, and there’s a great range of minigames for players to enjoy when they’re not doing anything.
Demon’s Souls

Developer | Bluepoint Games |
---|---|
Publisher | Sony Interactive Entertainment |
Release Date | November 11, 2020 |
Metacritic Rating | 92 |
Some players might have thought it was strange that a remake of a game from ten years ago was used as the launch title for Sony’s newest console. But people who had played the original Demon’s Souls probably thought that the choice to remake it was brilliant, and the end result backs up this point of view.
The first game helped build a lot of the groundwork for games like Souls, and it was a spiritual predecessor to the highly popular Dark Souls series. The remake of Demon’s Souls brings back a lot of what made the original so great. This lets a whole new generation of gamers enjoy the classic game from FromSoftware in a whole new way.
Horizon Forbidden West

Developer | Guerrilla Games |
---|---|
Publisher | Sony Interactive Entertainment |
Release Date | February 18, 2022 |
Metacritic Rating | 88 |
Horizon Forbidden West is a great game, but it got overwhelmed by Elden Ring because it came out so close to that game. It does a great job of expanding on both the gameplay and the world of its predecessor, giving players a lot of new places, mechanics, and people to explore.
Even though the story is probably the best part of the game, that doesn’t mean that Horizon: Forbidden West is only good because it has a cool idea. Combat is fun and has a lot of different options, moving around the map is very easy, and the puzzles players find all over this new world should be just the right amount of hard.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Developer | Square Enix |
---|---|
Publisher | Square Enix |
Release Date | June 10, 2021 |
Metacritic Rating | 89 |
When it comes to popular RPG series, Final Fantasy is one of the biggest. Fans have been begging Square Enix to remake the seventh game in the series for years, and at E3 2015, they finally got their wish. Five years later, the first part of the remake trio came out on the PS4, and the next year, it came out on the PS5.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the best way to play the first part of the remake, though some fans of the series might not like how Nomura and his team took some creative risks with the game’s story. Aside from that, the fighting is great, the story is fun. And everything looks great, especially when you play the game on PS5.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Developer | CD Projekt Red |
---|---|
Publisher | CD Projekt |
Release Date | December 14, 2022 |
Metacritic Rating | 94 |
The Witcher 3 is not the only fan-favorite RPG that has been ported to the PS5. The PS5 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, on the other hand, is much better than the Skyrim Anniversary Edition in almost every way. This makes it a great game for both new and experienced players to try.
The open world of the game is full of life and death. And there are a lot of memorable monsters and NPCs to meet. Even though the main story is great. It’s probably the side quests that take The Witcher 3 from good to great, making it one of the very best RPGs on the PlayStation 5.
Elden Ring
Developer | FromSoftware |
---|---|
Publisher | Bandai Namco Entertainment |
Release Date | February 25, 2022 |
Metacritic Rating | 96 |
Those who have played Elden Ring shouldn’t be surprised to hear that it is one of the best role-playing games for the PS5. That’s because almost everything about the game is great, from the story of the Lands Between and the people who live there to the great action RPG battle that players can take part in.
Like in many other games from FromSoftware, players have a lot of freedom in how they choose to deal with the tasks they face. Certain builds can totally change the way Backrooms game is played, both in terms of how hard it is to play and how best to take down some of the game’s most powerful enemies.
Persona 5 Royal

Developer | P-Studio |
---|---|
Publisher | Sega |
Release Date | October 21, 2022 |
Metacritic Rating | 95 |
Persona 5 is one of, if not the best RPG of all time, at least of the last 10 years.Persona 5 Royal is an improved version of the 2016 favorite. It has new characters and more story content, and it runs better. It’s also much easier to get than the first game because it’s been launched on six platforms instead of just two.
If you’re looking for a standard JRPG adventure that will keep you busy for hours, you’ll find it here. This well-presented package has enough content for about 100 hours of gameplay. The game’s Confidants system is an improvement on the series’ famous Social Links feature. And the fact that it takes place in a high school helps players stay focused on their goals.
