Joinery and manufacturing Dundee greatly expanded during the Industrial Revolution largely due to its jute industry. Its location on a major estuary allowed for easy importation of jute from India and whale oil needed for processing jute.
The city is the centre of a modern manufacturing and life sciences economy. It is represented in the British House of Commons and the Scottish Parliament.

Industrial
Joinery and manufacturing fife is a city in Scotland which has an impressive industrial reputation. Its economy is highly diverse with education, human health and social work, manufacturing, biomedicine and technology all contributing to its thriving sector. In addition it is home to a number of world-class companies including WL Gore and Associates, In Practice Systems, Cyclacel, The Wood Group and Upstate Life Sciences.
The city is located on the banks of the River Tay and surrounded by the North Sea. Its unique location has resulted in a variety of different industries developing, from the jute industry to shipbuilding. Jute remained a significant employer until the late 1960s when new industries were developed to replace it. These included the manufacture of magnetic-strip readers for cash machines and the production of tyres at the Michelin plant in Dundee.
In the 19th Century Dundee was a major port, and it also had a flourishing shipbuilding industry. It was responsible for building more than 2,000 ships, including the expedition vessel used by Robert Falcon Scott in Antarctica and the Discovery, which is now on display at the Dundee Science Centre. Its need for whale oil also supported a large whaling industry.
Liner Terminal
Today, the port of Dundee is a busy container and cruise liner terminal, with an average of 20 vessels visiting each day. In addition, the city has an extensive bus network with its main terminus at Seagate. Travel Dundee operates the majority of the city buses, with other services provided by Strathtay Scottish and First Scotrail.
As well as a vibrant business sector, Dundee has a strong cultural scene. It is home to Scotland’s only full-time repertory theatre, the Scottish Dance Theatre, and its principal concert auditorium, the Caird Hall, regularly hosts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The city’s literary heritage is celebrated through the annual William McGonagall Poetry Festival.
In recent years, Dundee has become an increasingly popular place to study and has a reputation for excellence in higher education. Its universities offer a wide palette of courses, from undergraduate Bachelor degrees to postgraduate Master’s and PhD degrees. It is also home to a range of colleges, including the new rebranded Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, which was rated “very good” in an HMIE inspection in 2005.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined local, county and business leaders in celebrating EOI Pioneer’s $14 million investment to expand its manufacturing operations at its existing facility in Dundee. The company expects to create 195 new jobs with assistance from a performance-based grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.
