The three tones yellow, blue and red are primary or fundamental colors. All other shades can be obtained from these, so they can be called the base of the color spectrum.
According to Homary, the term complementary colors, on the other hand, refers to the two colors that face each other on the color wheel. A mixture of the two tones results in a neutral gray hue. The best known example is the blue and yellow complementary pair.
